This drink got its fame due to the therapeutic characteristics. It’s believed you get dream like lucid hallucinations. Westerners came to discover this and instantly fell to the psychoactive trip of yage. People travel to far off destinations to experience taking yage or Ayahuasca.

Chemically active

Made from the leaves of Psycotria viridis shrubs and the stalks of Banisteriopsis caapi vine – Ayahuasca – also known as the tea, the vine, and la purga is very chemically potent. The ingredients have a great amount of hallucinogenic compounds.

Psychotria viridis contains N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a psychedelic substance that occurs naturally in the plant. DMT is a powerful hallucinogenic chemical. However, it has low bioavailability, as it gets rapidly broken down by enzymes called monoamine oxidases (MAOs) in your liver and gastrointestinal tract.

For this reason DMT must be combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAIs). This allows DMT to work it’s effects. B. Caapi is a source of Harmine, an alkaloid that inhibits the breakdowns in the digestive system of DMT.

Brewing the Ayahuasca

Brewing the sacred Vine or Ayahuasca is basic and usually suggested to be in a Ceremony. Where a Shaman prepares the Ayahuasca brews. But those who have the access to the above mentioned ingredients, can make one serving for themselves.

Procedure 1

The most common dosage recipe is 85g fresh psycotria viridis (Chacruna) leaves and 50g of fresh stalks of Banisteriopsis Caapi vine.

1. Crush the Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine stalks and place them in large pots.

2. Add the Psycotria viridis leaves.

3. Start boiling this mixture in a large quantity of water for 3-6 hours.

4. Remove the water and strain the plant matter.

5. Add large quantity of new water, prepare for a second batch.

6. Boil this for another 3-6 hours.

7. Strain out the plant material and

8. Reduce the liquid into a thick brew over gentle heat.

Procedure 2

This procedure is carried out by Shamans in an Ayahuasca Ceremony. The ingredients here are not listed due to the fact that finding all of them is close to impossible on your own. You will need a guide to do the needful. However mentioning the ceremony is important.

1. The Shaman splits a 1-2 meters long piece of Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine into small strips.

2. They place the strips into a large pot along with several litres of water.

3. They add leaves of Diplopterys cabrerana, a Herrania species, Ilex guayusa, Heliconia Stricta, and an unidentified Malpighiales known as Mukuyasku.

4. The mixture is boiled until most of the water has been reduced to a syrupy fluid.

The ceremonial Ayahuasca is very differently made. And the experience of such ceremonies is expensive.

Syrian Rue vs. Banisteriopsis Caapi or Ayahuasca Vine

Syrian rue is also a MAOI which is used as an alternative to Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine. Though it is considered less controlled and is known for being too harsh. Banisteriopsis Caapi has been tried and tested to be very “smooth” and at times more safe from Peganum Harmala or better known as Syrian Rue. Syrian rue is unpredictable and less reliable.

Experiences

Enthusiasts and Professional Ayahuasca drinkers have mentioned a vivid description of their experiences during the consumption of Ayahuasca. The fact that it was used by Shamans to gain a higher perception of reality and the fact that it plays with the neurological construct of a person is already a point of great research. The use of DMT as a recreational drug of sorts does bring out some controversy to this sacred drink which is the main reason for its fame in the market. However those who use it to get a life changing experience do put forward a great source of knowledge about our brain. Here are some of the Ayahuasca experiences.
